How does Gastric Plication work?

Gastric plication is a laparoscopic procedure (otherwise known as a keyhole surgery), where your stomach is folded and stitched. As a result, your stomach will be made significantly smaller so it will take much less food to make you feel full.

However, like all weight loss surgery Gastric Plication is a tool to help you lose weight and not an immediate fix. It takes a great deal of research and discipline to be able to follow the post op diet and then introduce your own healthy diet to maintain your weight loss. But the results will be life changing.

How do I qualify for Gastric Plication?

For this procedure, your BMI needs to be 35 or above. Though, if your BMI is slightly lower and you have been heavier in the past the surgeon may still accept you subject to your medical questionnaire and history.

Is Gastric Plication reversible?

Yes. A surgeon can can potentially remove the stitching to reverse the procedure. However, unless required for medical reasons we would generally advise against reversal as you stand the chance of regaining lost weight.

How long does it take to recover from Gastric Plication?

The surgery itself takes around 1 to 2 hours to perform. Post surgery you will be required to stay in the clinic three days. In addition, we would always advise at least one more week at home to recover followed by light duties at work for three weeks. You will need to follow a post op diet for 6 to 8 weeks before introducing your own healthy diet to maintain your weight loss.
